The ARA is the governing body for the sport of rowing in Great Britain, responsible for representing GB's interests to FISA, and for the preparation, training and selection of GB teams. The ARA is also responsible for the organisation and development of rowing in England. The Scottish Amateur Rowing Association (SARA) and the Welsh Amateur Rowing Association (WARA) are responsible for the organisation and development of rowing in Scotland and Wales respectively.
Affiliated to the ARA are over 500 clubs and 250 competitions on the national calendar with rowing taking place all over the country. The clubs and regattas are grouped into 24 divisions each division electing a representative to sit on the ARA Council, the governing committee of the sport. Eleven regional rowing councils also help to link the clubs to the national level and each has a representative on Coaching, Women, Development, and Safety committees. The ARA also employs central and field staff.
